Banjo: Recompiled for Android

Android port of Banjo: Recompiled with the full desktop feature set: high frame rates, widescreen, faithful audio, note saving and mod support. Adds controller auto-detection and dual-screen support for foldables and dual-screen handhelds.

Original Dev: Rare
Port Maintainer(s): AurelioB

What You Need

  1. Requires a backup of your own Banjo-Kazooie cartridge as a supported ROM.

    • Banjo-Kazooie ROM
    Verify Your Files (Client-Side) 100% In-Browser
Privacy guarantee: Files never leave your device. File names, headers, and checksums are checked locally in your browser.

Drag & drop file(s) here or browse from your device

Matches your files against this port's requirements and calculates SHA-256 hashes.

    File Requirements Checklist (1 required):

    • Banjo-Kazooie ROM Pending file
  2. Target hardware: Snapdragon 865 or newer or equivalent (64-bit ARM64, Android 10+).

  3. Controls ready out of the box

On-screen touch controls work immediately. Physical Bluetooth and USB-C controllers are also supported.

Static MIPS Translation via N64Recomp & the RT64 Vulkan Backend

Banjo-Kazooie on Android is powered by BanjoRecomp-Android, an ARM64 native adaptation maintained by AurelioB. The port builds directly upon the desktop Banjo: Recompiled project developed by Wiseguy and the N64: Recompiled engineering team. Instead of executing inside an N64 emulator such as Mupen64Plus, Rare’s 1998 MIPS R4300i binary is statically recompiled into C code and compiled into a native 64-bit Android binary.

Graphics are driven by DarioSamo’s modern RT64 Vulkan rendering backend and the ultramodern runtime library. Because rendering is completely decoupled from the game’s internal 30 Hz logic ticks, the port implements transform matrix interpolation, achieving fluid 60 FPS or 120 FPS presentation without accelerating character physics, jump arcs, or swimming animations. The engine supports arbitrary widescreen and ultrawide aspect ratios without horizontal FOV clipping or geometry culling artifacts.

Loading Cartridge Assets via Storage Access Framework

To comply with copyright laws, the installer package distributes zero proprietary Nintendo or Rare assets:

  1. Create a legal .z64 cartridge backup from your own retail copy of Banjo-Kazooie (North American USA v1.0 release).
  2. Download and install the latest BanjoRecompiled-<version>-Android-ARM64.apk from the GitHub Releases repository.
  3. Launch the application; the port utilizes Android’s native Storage Access Framework (SAF) file picker.
  4. Select your .z64 cartridge backup file from internal storage.
  5. The engine validates the cartridge header hash, extracts the requisite geometry, audio banks, and texture assets in memory, and immediately boots into the Spiral Mountain intro sequence.

Vulkan Pipeline Performance, High Frame Rates & Foldable Dual-Screen Layouts

The RT64 Vulkan 1.1+ backend requires capable modern hardware to maintain high frame rates. Performance expectations include:

  • Snapdragon Performance: Devices powered by the Snapdragon 865, 8 Gen 1, 8 Gen 2, or 8 Gen 3 (featuring Adreno 650, 730, 740, and 750 GPUs) run locked at 60 FPS to 120 FPS at native display resolutions.
  • Driver Stability: Standard vendor Vulkan drivers handle RT64 pipeline compilation smoothly, requiring no third-party Turnip driver layers.
  • Dual-Screen Foldable Architecture: A hallmark innovation of AurelioB’s Android port is native multi-display and foldable device handling. On foldable smartphones (like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series) or dual-screen handhelds, the engine can project gameplay onto the primary screen while dedicating the secondary display to real-time collectible trackers (Jiggies, Musical Notes, and Mumbo Tokens).

Handheld Controls, Free Camera Mapping & Mod Loading

BanjoRecomp-Android modernizes the classic 3D platformer control scheme with comprehensive input adaptations:

  • Dual-Analog Free Camera: Replaces original discrete C-button camera panning with modern 360-degree analog right-stick camera rotation.
  • Handheld Controller Auto-Detection: Automatically identifies connected Xbox, PlayStation, and built-in controls on dedicated Android consoles (such as the Retroid Pocket 4 and AYN Odin 2), assigning talon trot, beak buster, and egg firing to intuitive modern triggers and face buttons.
  • Touch Overlay: Includes a customizable on-screen touch control layout for devices without physical controllers.
  • Mod and Texture Support: Supports loading community .nrm and .rtz modifications directly, enabling HD texture packs and permanent Musical Note saving options reminiscent of the Xbox Live Arcade release.
