Static Translation of Ubisoft’s Jade Engine via reSOT
Ubisoft Montreal’s 2003 platforming masterpiece Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time runs natively on Android thanks to reSOT, an open-source static recompilation project maintained by FulGerNet inside the rePOP codebase. Rather than relying on Original Xbox emulators like Xemu, reSOT decompiles the console’s 32-bit x86 default.xbe executable into portable C source code. This recompiled logic is then compiled directly targeting 64-bit ARM (aarch64) Android hardware.
The original game was built on Ubisoft’s proprietary Jade Engine, initially developed by Michel Ancel’s team for Beyond Good & Evil. reSOT faithfully translates the Jade Engine’s internal game loops, skeletal rigging, and complex time-manipulation subroutines into native mobile execution. Remarkably, FulGerNet’s single unified Android APK accommodates two software targets: the full North American retail release (Title ID 0x5553001D) and the rare E3 2003 Xbox demo.
Setting Up Original Xbox Disc Images via the Built-In Installer
To comply with digital rights and copyright law, reSOT does not supply any proprietary Ubisoft textures, audio streams, or level geometries. Players must provide assets extracted from their own physical media:
- Create a disc image or extract the game files from your own retail North American (
NTSC-U, Title ID0x5553001D) Original Xbox disc (or E3 2003 demo disc). - Download and install
reSOT-android.apk(such as releasereSOT v0.3.3) from the officialFulGerNet/rePOPGitHub Releases page. - Grant the required storage access permissions and open the application.
- Launch the integrated, in-app game installer wizard and direct it toward your disc image or unpacked game files.
- The installer parses the internal directory hierarchy, unpacks geometry packages and sound banks into local storage, and generates the necessary initialization indices to launch immediately.
Vulkan Backend Architecture, Hor+ Widescreen & SoC Optimization
Rendering in reSOT is managed entirely through a modern Vulkan graphics pipeline designed to translate original Direct3D 8 fixed-function and programmable shader instructions into native SPIR-V shaders:
- Widescreen Presentation: The engine implements true 16:9 Hor+ camera framing, expanding horizontal field-of-view across modern mobile displays without aspect ratio stretching or pillarboxing.
- Cinematics & Audio: Full-motion Bink video (
.bik) cutscenes, ambient music, environmental audio, and character dialogue play back accurately. - Hardware Performance: While the project remains in active alpha with minor shader artifacts under refinement, the maintainer verified boots and platforming on MediaTek and Samsung hardware. For smooth frame pacing across palace chambers, a Snapdragon 865 or newer SoC on Android 10+ is recommended.
Touch Layouts, Handheld Controls & Dagger of Time Rewind Mechanics
Precision parkour requires immediate, low-latency control response. The port provides versatile input options for navigating Sultan’s palace:
- Full Controller Integration: Native recognition for Bluetooth and USB-C controllers (such as the Xbox Wireless Controller, DualSense, Retroid Pocket 4 Pro, and AYN Odin 2), mapping acrobatic wall-runs, vaulting, and sword parries to ergonomic analog sticks and triggers.
- Time Rewind Mechanics: The Prince’s signature Dagger of Time rewind feature functions smoothly, reserving dedicated bumper inputs to reverse real-time game state during fatal platforming missteps.
- On-Screen Touch: Includes a responsive touch overlay with virtual analog sticks and action clusters for gaming on smartphones without peripheral hardware.
